We first presented the great Bobby Broom Trio at the Whiskey Lounge last December in a special event hosted by Chicago jazz station WDCB (90.9FM). Not only was it a fabulous night of jazz, in the days following the event WDCB offered to be our series co-sponsor for 2015 … and Bobby approached me about a return engagement! I could not have been happier.Bobby, of course, is a legendary jazz guitarist and his trio includes bassist Dennis Carroll and drummer Makaya McCraven — the same incredible lineup we saw in December. Bobby has performed with jazz giants including Sonny Rollins, Al Haig and Donald Byrd, and toured as the opening act for Steely Dan in 2013. Dennis has been Bobby’s bassist for years and has played with The Ron Perrillo Trio and the Chicago Jazz Orchestra. In addition to touring with Bobby, Makaya has played with such luminaries as Archie Shepp, Yusef Lateef, Fareed Haque and Willie Pickens. This is a powerful trio.
Bobby is quite frequently on the road so it’s taken several months to find a date to catch these guys while they’re in town. Those of us in the audience on Thursday will be fortunate to soak it in.
