Foi a Saudade (Sonora Paramarera)
The samba “Foi a Saudade” (Djalma Ferreira/Iza Ferreira) is not from
the 1970s. The first recording — by Paulo Ricardo – was made in Brazil in 1963. The second was by Miltinho in the album ‘Canção do Nosso Amor’ (1964).
Djalma Ferreira moved to Las Vegas and hooked up with Leonard Feather, who wrote English lyrics for a number of his compositions. Thus “Foi a Saudade” became “You Can’t Go Home Again.”
In 1964, Laurindo de Almeida recorded it not only in ‘Collaboration’
with the MJQ but also with Joanie Sommers in ‘Softly, The Brazilian
Sound.’ Charlie Byrd recorded it with a band in ‘Brazilian
Byrd’ (1965).
